Where does Cupping come from?

Cupping therapy has been around for over 3 thousand years. The first record of this form of alternative medicine dates from 1,550 B.C. in Egypt. It was used as a method to purify the body. This therapy technique has been used by many cultures at one point in time, and even by American physicians up until the late 1800s.

After spending some time in the shadows, cupping has resurfaced in Western medicine and has become present in physiotherapy, massage and chiropractic clinics throughout Canada, including at Cappino Physio and Wellness Centers.

What is Cupping?

Cupping therapy involves placing heated cups on the skin to create suction. The suction helps the healing process by allowing blood flow to sore areas in the muscle which provides nutrients to the specific area. Cupping stimulates the small nerves inside the muscle and releases natural pain-killing chemicals (like endorphins, enkelaphalins and dynorphins). These are what provide the pain relief.
